Helping drivers meet government compliance requirements

With the Electronic Logging Device mandate (ELD) about to take effect at the end of 2017, I was asked to lead the design process for improving ZED Connect's mobile apps and web portal. The mobile app connects to a bluetooth-enabled adapter connected to a commercial truck's engine. The adapter records driving events, as well as any manually entered duty status changes, and creates a Department of Transportation compliant report that details how much time that user has spent driving. All of this information is backed-up to a web-portal that has its own interface for fleet managers to access information about their drivers.

This project required balancing design needs across a variety of devices and platforms, as well as mastering emerging technologies for commercial truck drivers. As a start-up, there was a lot of work to be done to define visual design language, branding, and conduct initial user research.
